HAPPY 14th BIRTHDAY RICHARD!

It was a typical gray June morning in Tacoma, Washington. There was a drizzle of rain falling and fog had rolled in off of the water of the Puget Sound. At Tacoma General Hospital a very tired 38 year old Marianne was in labor. Dee and I had left the house quietly at 3:30 in the morning while our four daughters and my mother slept soundly.

I had always been a trooper in labor never asking for more than the bare minimum in pain relief.

This time was different.

I felt old and drained.

I asked for an epidural.

I marveled at its' power.

At 11:30 am a sweet little cry was heard. It was our one and only son coming into the world!

9 lbs. 4 oz. of beautiful wonder!

He was a hungry little guy right off, sucking and chewing on his chubby fist as they cleaned him up. Then he downed and entire ounce of formula. He had all of the nurses eating out of his hand!

Richard has been a pure joy for all of us since he joined us June 20, 1995. He came from heaven blessed with the gifts of love, compassion, tenderness, and spirituality. These gifts have blessed our lives and helped him through some pretty deep trials of his own.

Today he returned triumphant from scout camp having earned merit badges, and full of funny camp stories to tell. Tomorrow he will be interviewed to advance in the Aaronic Priesthood to the office of Teacher.

Where has my baby gone?

He has become that marvelous young man I see!

Happy birthday my boy! I love you!

Minutes old and hungry!

Happy Birthday to my sweet Richard! What a joy he has been to our family. He's such a good young man!

I have been gone all week so I'm commenting on a few: I hear rumors that some people are still getting reception with their old televisions. Don't know if it's true, but I loved your retrospective you put together.

I did think of you on your anniversary as I set up camp. I remember that day clearly. It was hot, I had all those little nieces and nephews to keep out of the fountains and your flowers to keep alive. It was all worth it. That was a great day. The ice cream men didn't have to wear form fitting disco era silky dresses. But the color was beautiful, especially since we'd all been laying out.

I love you!!!

Richard; I remember the day you were born very well. It was so wonderful to be able to sleep at night, with you close by, and to answer your "cries" in the night.
It was hard to leave you, and go back to Bloomfield, when Grandpa came for me. You have made me so happy through the years and I am sure you will make me happy for a long time to come. Remember I love you. Grandma

PS tell your Mom thanks for the Blog. And I love her too
