Time Travel Tuesdays~

 So Sad!

Today we travel back to the 1920's.  I have been immersed in family history this last week. As I explained in the last T.T.T. I am scanning my mother's photographs for her. They range from the 1850's to the present. I became lost in the 20's and 30's watching my parents and their brothers and sisters grow up. I fell in love with my very blond little parents and their simple lives.

The photos I chose today enchanted me. So often those old photos were so stiffly posed but these two break that mold. I see life happening to my parents and they were not happy!

In this first one we see some Ellsworth children in the fall 1921 or winter of 1922. The girls are sporting the haircut of the day, a very shot bob, and big bows in their hair. They have on long dark stockings and sturdy, sensible shoes. The boys are in their short pants and wear long stockings as well. It must have been a a chilly day in Mesa (maybe all of 50 degrees, brr!) because they are wearing their winter coats and sweaters. This is the home of my grandparents George Franklin "Frank" & Annie Dean Ellsworth. He described it as one of the first brick homes in Mesa. The children piled on the family car are posing happily but if you take a peek inside the rear window you will see a very unhappy baby. That's my Dad! He was born July 12, 1921. I have also discovered someone else in there with him who my Mom did not see when she labeled this photo. I am fairly certain it is my Aunt Dora. Why little George was so sad we won't ever know but isn't he adorable?
L. to R. on the car are  Ruth Ellsworth, two Griner cousins (sons of Franks' sister Hilda), and Lora Corbett Ellsworth (Dora's twin sister).

Next, we journey northeast to Bluewater, New Mexico and approximately 1923-24.
The family of Don Carlos and Ida Lee Hamblin had moved there from Nutrioso, Arizona where my mother had been born on December 5, 1922. I don't know the occasion, why my Aunts Priscilla and Fay are posing in their dainty dresses, but one thing is certain. The Hamblins had a few funny daughters!
Who has conspired to mess up this otherwise darling picture, therefore making it even more sweet? That's my silly Aunt Fern who has jumped into the background (not to be left out!). There's little baby Shirley (one sock off & one sock on...) walking into the shot and who is that little doll by the house? The one who is pouting because she could not pose with her big sisters?
That is my mother Helen! I just want to scoop her up and hug her!
I am so glad that I can share these precious moments in time with you! They tug my heart backward and make me so grateful for everyone who went before me and gave me the lovely life that I have!

Happy Tuesday!

The best part is that, with the exception of Priscilla, I know and remember all these Aunts! (on a much older basis of course!) I loved Grandma's sisters because it always such an adventure to be with them...like the family reunion when I was about 7 where they all discovered an anatomically correct doll and couldn't stop talking about how cute that was! Good memories...I sure miss those days!

Oh I love these pictures!!! I've never seen the one with your daddy crying with his sisters Ruth & Lora. And the one of your mother - sooo cute! I didn't realize either that she was born on December 5th. Brent was born on December 5th too. I will make sure that Dianne & Doug see this entry of your blog - they will love seeing their mother.

Read your comment regarding my comment - ha! Oh I can't wait to see the photos. I think I am the only one that just goes goo goo over stuff like this. Doug is very sentimental and loves to see and read anything he can get his hands on about his parents and grandparents and also aunts & uncles. I will pass the word to Ralph, Wayne & Dianne too. Cory is my neighbor so I'll tell him too. I'm excited!!

Oh these are just too sweet for words! I love your T.T.T. you must keep sharing! These pictures are just priceless. Seeing Grandpa George crying I just wanted to pick him up and comfort him and the one of Grandma Helen just broke my heart!!! She looks so sweet and the poor the little thing just wanted to be as big as her sisters and be in the picture. Oh too sweet for words. Thanks again for sharing!

Love ya,
JoLynn
